For clients who are (D)deaf or hard of hearing, having a hearing dog can support safety, independence and community inclusion. Tasks which can help include:
- alert to name being called
- warn the handler someone is about to touch them
- alert to fire alarm or other emergency sounds
- refuse to cross if sirens sounding
- wake handler
- alert to door knock and lead to door
- indicate to unnoticed dropped items
- alert to bells e.g. school bell
- alert to overhead announcements
- family member sends dog to find and return with person who is (D)deaf/ hard of hearing
