For clients who are (D)deaf or hard of hearing, having a hearing dog can support safety, independence and community inclusion. Tasks which can help include:

• alert to name being called
• warn the handler someone is about to touch them
• alert to fire alarm or other emergency sounds
• refuse to cross if sirens sounding
• wake handler
• alert to door knock and lead to door
• indicate to unnoticed dropped items 
• alert to bells e.g. school bell
• alert to overhead announcements
• family member sends dog to find and return with person who is (D)deaf/ hard of hearing
