This course is open to people wishing to join and who meet the eligibility criteria for our assistance dog program. Your dog must already be able to sit, lie down and come when called at home and be over 16 weeks of age to be able to join this course. In order to be able to join the assistance dog program you must first have completed this course, which contains:

  • 6, 45-minute group live zoom classes
  • 6 exercises to try out and about in the community
  • Virtual learning material and project

The pre-application course covers:

  • Socialisation skills - the right way to introduce your dog to new settings, objects, people & animals.
  • Building the dog's confidence around items they are fearful of.
  • Introduction to basic obedience skills - to sit, lie down, wait for food, wait in place, leave things they are never allowed, recall around minimal distractions, target, walk on a loose lead, watch handler.
  • Training techniques - targeting, shaping, prompt and fade, chaining, capturing and connection.
  • Welfare 

Once you've completed the 6 sessions, if you still wish to join the assistance dog program you'll need to sent us your written project and 3 videos of your dog:
  • 1 on lead walking past at least 3 other dogs (not greeting)
  • 1 off lead with other dogs and 1 of the young person and dog playing together
  • 1 of the dog and young person playing or interacting together for at least 3 minutes
We will use our observation notes (including your participation, dogs behaviour etc), the written project and 3 videos to determine if we feel you and your dog are suitable for our assistance dog program.
