If you or your child often do not notice or process dangers outside the home, your dog can learn to do several tasks which help to improve your safety, confidence and independence. Including:
- Dual handling - This is where the dog is handled by 2 people. One is controlling the dog and the second person has a second handle attached to the dogs harness which they hold to ensure they stay close to the dog and therefore away from dangers.
- Refusing to cross the road until handler has checked it is safe.
- Indicating to curbs/ tactile paving and stop at all curbs.
- Indicate to emergency sounds (e.g. if might miss them due to ear defenders/ music playing)
- Lead to nearest bench (to regulate, find a safe space).
- Find and lead to parent/carer/partner/supportive person.
- Follow the leader (dog is taught to follow the person the handler indicates to follow - this is great if you get disoriented).
- Alert to obstacles in path
- Indicate to steps or stairs
- Hugging to the walls to prevent the handler stepping/ veering off route/ into traffic
